Purpose: The purpose of our study is to examine how special education skills are used in primary school. We intend to examine the similarities and differences in the way teachers and special education teachers perceive the content and function of the special education assignment. Method: Literature review and interviews with three special education teachers and six teachers, working in three different schools, represents the basis for our study. Results: The interviews show that the perception of special education assignments differ in the schools. According to special educators their main mission is to have an overall responsibility for the special education support at the individual, group and organizational level. This fits well with the curriculum of the Special Education Teacher program at Malmö University (2008). According to the teachers, however, the primary role of the special educator is to be available to help students on an individual level. Our conclusion is that the special educator can be seen as an important player in the effort to improve the school learning environment, based on the vision of creating a school for all.
