    Abstract [en]

Rajic, M Diabetes mellitus typ II. How the self-care of diabetes II in immigrants is affected by language difficulties, culture and gender. Degree Project,15 Credit Points. Nursing Program, Malmö University: Health and Society, Department of Nursing, 2011. Diabetes mellitus type II is a chronic disease which affects grown up people. Today the debut is decreasing further down in age. With a greater amount of immigrants entering our country we meet more people with diabetes type II with an immigrant background. These people often have problems with the Swedish language and have a different cultural view of the disease. The purpose of this study was to enlighten what affects the daily self-care of diabetes type II in immigrants. The study asks several questions; how do language difficulties affect the daily self-care of diabetes in immigrants? How does the cultural view of the disease affect the self-care? Are there differences between the genders in how self-care is implemented? The study is based on six scientific articles. Results: The articles show that the cultural view of the disease does affect the self –care of diabetes. It also shows that it is important that immigrants with diabetes type II get relevant support in their self-care. It is also important that health care staff give attention to the language problems of the immigrant. An understanding of their culture, gender and family situation is also required. Keywords: culture, diabetes mellitus type II, family, gender, immigrants, language
