    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this study was to look into a couple of teachers’ views of the purpose of literary fiction, in English language teaching, and also how they work with fiction in their teaching. The study was limited to a secondary school in a municipality in the south-east part of Skåne. The study was based on interviews. Further information has been acquired from research, literature and the Internet. The result shows that learning vocabulary is the primary purpose according to the interviewed teachers. Another motive to use fiction that was brought up by the interviewees was that it stimulates the reading habit. Moreover, fiction was seen to develop pupils’ fantasy and also their insight into and empathy with other people’s lives and cultures. The teachers have many ways to work with texts and the most common one is working with questions on the text. Furthermore the study shows that teachers are dissatisfied with the lack of English fiction, including class-sets of books, in the school libraries.
