English abstract
In the chapter we explore early childhood education, gender relations and equality between parents and families in Sweden. In the chapter we discuss the historical conditions and examine the basis of current studies on contemporary relationships between preschools and families. From a historical perspective it is evident that early childhood education and care (ECEC) has made a crucial impact on Swedish society, including the preconditions for parental roles and familiy life. The expansion of ECEC in the growth of the welfare state in Sweden has significantly influenced social and gender equality, and as a consequence, it was also met with a lot of resistance relating to power relations and gender issues.
