English abstract
This chapter focus on fire symbolism in ritual practices ands in ritual speech among the Yucatec Maya seen in a long term perspective. The main sources in this chapter are Early Colonial documents and Yucatec Maya manuscripts such as the Books of Chilam Balam and the Ritual of the Bacabs. Important new data also comes from the ethnographic Collection from the Swedish Prince Wilhelms journey to the Maya area in 1920.
