Mollberg, A. From intensive care to a ward. Nurses´experiences of receiving a patient from intensive care, an interview study. Nursing degree project in 15 university points. Malmö University: Health and society, Department of nursing, 2008 Earlier studies have shown that a problem exists when patients from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) are transferred to hospital wards with a lower level of care, where the conditions and limited resources of the ward make it difficult to meet the needs of the patient. The purpose of this study was to obtain a deeper understanding of what ward nurses at a hospital in the south of Sweden experience when a patient is admitted to the ward from the ICU. The transcribed interviews from nine nurses were analyzed with the help of content analysis. The results fell into the following themes: Experiences of the transfer process, Experiences at the ward, Problem areas and solutions, which shed light on the problem areas and provided suggestions for improvements. The nurses experienced a significant difference in the level of care between wards and had difficulty meeting patients’ needs during evenings, nights and weekends. Nurse interns felt uncertain and had great need for information, collaboration, and a development of their capabilities. Despite the need for a higher level of care on the ward, the interviewees experienced that the wards’ limited personnel, technical and supervising resources resulted in an increased risk for patients. The interviewees regarded that experience was important when receiving a patient and that the development of knowledge and cooperation between wards was valuable for the future.
