The purpose of this paper was to find out whether elderly foreign people living in retirement homes in Malmö, Sweden, need language adapted elder care. Qualitative interviews were conducted within retirement homes with both caretakers and caregivers. The target group was elderly people with migrant backgrounds living in retirement homes and the personnel working with them. Our questions were mainly about communication problems experienced by elderly and caregivers and their perceived need for language adapted elderly care. The results showed that both caregivers and caretakers need language adapted eldercare to be able to communicate. The literature shows that language is the key to communication that enhances comprehensibility. Language difficulties can cause communication problems and make the elderly immigrant feel lonely and isolated. To the elderly immigrant who already belongs to a vulnerable group in society, it is especially important to be able to communicate in order to manage daily life. Therefore it is essential to be able to express their thoughts and feelings and to create a meaningful social connection with others.
