    Abstract [en]

Aim. The aim of this study was to provide an overview of compliance with hand hygiene and if there is a chance of improvement. The issues included the extent to which hygiene practices are followed, which are the reasons for non-compliance and if there are possibilities for improvement. Method. A literature review that compiles quantitative scientific research. Background. Healthcare-associated infections are a major problem in healthcare. These can prolong hospitalization, cause suffering, continuing ill health or disability. To prevent them, hand hygiene should be followed. It can therefore be of great importance to know the compliance of hygiene procedures and factors that can affect it. Results. The results are divided into three categories in which the findings are reported. Factors affecting compliance of hygiene are: stress, lack of time, lack of skills, education and work materials. Education about hand hygiene is considered to be very important for compliance. There is an insufficient enforcement of hand hygiene in health care. Conclusion. The review shows major deficiencies in hand hygiene compliance in healthcare. There are several factors that affect compliance adversely. It still requires a lot of work with the health care staff to improve hand hygiene.
