    Abstract [en]

In Sweden there are about 150 000 persons with dementia. Approximately 70 percent of these persons are being taken care of by family members. To become a family caregiver leads to a change of life, and a risk to be exposed to emotional strain. The aim of this literature study has been to illuminate different aspects of a relatives caregiving of a person with a dementia disease. An analyse of eleven scientific articles was made. The result showed that family caregivers looked upon caring as a part of life and a way to express their love. One important aspect was to maintain the dignity of the person with dementia. Negative experiences were for example grief and difficulty to communicate. Copingstrategies were divided into three themes; measures to look for help, knowledge and social support; to adapt and make everyday life easier; and emotional coping. The result in the study can be guidance for development of different efforts that can be important, so that caring becomes better than worse.
